When people are misgendered, they feel invalidated and unseen. When this happens daily, it becomes a burden that can negatively impact mental health and ability to function in the world. Data indicate that 82% of transgender people have considered killing themselves (Austin, D’Souza and McInroy, 2020). Findings from the National Transgender Discrimination Survey state that 41% have attempted suicide, with suicidality highest among transgender youth and notably, interpersonal macroaggressions show a statistically significant contribution to lifetime suicide attempts ahead of the emotional neglect by family (Tanis, 2016). This burden may be lightened for transgender/non-binary people by using the right names, pronouns, and honorifics to refer to them by and therefor create a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment. This training will explore the impact of misgendering, specific strategies for increasing awareness around cultural humility in our work with trans and non-binary people, creating understanding of the use of ‘they’ as a singular pronoun, and creating comfort in sharing and asking about pronouns.
