Victoria Miller, MA, BCBA, LBS (Read Bio)
Training Description:
More than two-thirds of children are estimated to be exposed to at least one traumatic event by age 16, with at least 1 in 7 children experiencing abuse and/or neglect in the past year (SAMHSA, 2022). In addition, children with any type of disability have an elevated risk of being victimized. Despite these alarming statistics, many mental and behavioral health clinicians and technicians report feeling ill-equipped to competently work with clients and families who have a trauma history. Until recently, specific guidance on empirically validated trauma-informed treatment has not been considered an essential component to many university curricula and employer training programs, notably in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). In the behavioral realm, trauma can be conceptualized as a setting event that has potential for notable impact on behavior and daily functioning for many children. In this training, a general framework is provided that can assist in guiding meaningful and ethical behavioral treatment for clients who have experienced trauma. This will also entail review of potential interventions that can be applied with clients as well as those procedures which may be contraindicated given a particular trauma background. A brief case study will be explored in order to best apply the concepts reviewed during the training.
