Emily Hornung-Thimes, LSW
Training Description
Many parents seek behavioral health services for their child who is displaying challenging behaviors. While treatment is guided by the therapist using principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), the participation of caregivers and other natural supports is crucial in attaining meaningful child outcomes. Many parents are likely to attribute the cause of their child's undesirable behaviors to internal factors and generally underestimate their own influence on their child’s behavior. ABA recognizes that behavior operates on the environment, is typically logical and orderly, and that individuals will repeat behaviors that have been reinforced. This training aims to briefly explore some basic behavioral principles and how they work, review strategies in applying principles and interventions, and identify ways to talk to parents about these concepts and strategies. An emphasis will also be placed on helping caregivers to develop insight into the functionality of their own behavior and the corresponding bidirectional relationship with the behavioral patterns of their child.
