Stabilizing Suicidal Children and Adolescents through Systemic Safety Planning

Trainer

Miranda Stickler, LMFT AS

Description

According to the data collected by the CDC, suicide risk for children and adolescents continues to be on the rise with over 20% of young people of a random poll reporting seriously considering suicide within the last 12 months. It is a therapist’s responsibility to continue to find creative strategies to generate protective factors for families being challenged with this mental health epidemic. This training will look at ways to conceptualize child and adolescent suicidal behavior from a systemic lens. Eco-systemic Structural Family Therapy suggests that a child's mental health does not exist in a vacuum and is best understood in the context of relationships in their life and the larger societal culture. This training will provide concrete interventions for therapists to utilize with families to de-escalate crisis when suicidal behavior is present and will also highlight ways to safety plan that bring a network of connections around the struggling young person.
