The Wisdom of Trauma: Neurobiology, Meaning-Making, and Trauma-Informed Practice

Trainer

Deb Thomas, MA, LPC

Description

This three-hour, in-person continuing education course integrates a guided screening of The Wisdom of Trauma with contemporary, peer-reviewed research on trauma, neurobiology, attachment, and human development. The course intentionally shifts the clinical frame from a pathology-based question of “What is wrong with you?” to a trauma-informed, developmentally grounded question of “What happened to you?”

Participants will examine how psychological suffering emerges from unmet developmental and relational needs and how trauma is expressed through the body, nervous system, and patterns of connection and disconnection with self and others. Through didactic instruction, facilitated film viewing, reflective discussion, and applied clinical integration, clinicians will deepen their understanding of the somatic, relational, and meaning-making dimensions of trauma and identify pathways for healing rooted in safety, attunement, and reconnection.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain trauma as an adaptive response shaped by developmental, relational, and somatic processes.
  • Describe how early experiences influence nervous system regulation, attachment patterns, and emotional functioning.
  • Identify how disconnection from self, body, and others contributes to ongoing psychological distress.
  • Apply trauma-informed, nervous-system-aware principles to clinical conceptualization and therapeutic presence.
  • Evaluate healing pathways that emphasize safety, co-regulation, meaning-making, and reconnection.
