Description:
The role of a clinical supervisor is a challenging task. The supervisor holds the ethical responsibility of helping develop a clinician that can function autonomously as well as the ethics to uphold quality care for the clients and families. In order to meet both goals, a supervisor must avoid stepping in too quickly to make decisions and instead co-discover and collaborate with the supervisee to help the supervisee develop and learn their own ethical decision-making model while still keeping clients safe. This will be a slow-down pace and more in-depth training to explore how supervisors can encourage ethical decision-making in supervisees, while still protecting client care. There will be discussion around many of the concrete ethical dilemmas’ supervisors face throughout the supervisee relationship. The training with outline the difference between a supervisor relationship that breeds dependency and one that promotes learning and internalizing the skills so the supervisor can grow in their own ability to make choices. Ethical-decision making models will be discussed and the training will list and demonstrate interventions supervisors will use to produce supervisees capable of making ethical decision in their clinical practice. We will engage in intentional practice to guide supervisors in increasing their confidence in using these skills and concrete tools for evaluating your supervision will be provided. For licensed professionals, this training will fulfill the ethics requirement for licensure renewal.
