Just Tell Me What To Do: The Theraueptic Use of Co-Discovery Over Problem-Solving

Trainer

Miranda Stickler, LMFT AS

Description

Description:

It can be a commonly held myth that therapists will fix your problems and give clients advice on what to do when facing challenges. However, creating lasting change for clients, couples, and families often looks much different than this expert-giving-answers modality. Most effective therapy orientations rely at least in part on the skill of Co-discovery and joint exploration. This training will focus on defining the skill of co-discovery and its core concepts in therapy. Shifting the power differential in the therapeutic relationship through the use of Socratic Questioning and the Vulnerability of Not Knowing will be explored. Clinicians will learn micro-skills that help the therapy stay process-oriented instead of switching into problem-solving mode, and develop signs that they have shifted away from curiosity and co-discovery. The training will also encourage participants to be reflective on what gets in their way of co-discovery including: therapist anxiety and the urge to fix.
